BALLOON FLIGHTS SEGOVIA

  • One of our favorite places to fly, Segovia, a city declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, offers us the privilege of taking a balloon ride over 21 centuries of history. As soon as we take off, we will enjoy wonderful views from the air: the 1st century Roman Aqueduct, the Alcazar (1465), the Gothic Cathedral (1525)... The landscape and its microclimate make Segovia one of the best destinations in the world for hot-air ballooning.
  • In this fairytale city you'll find fantastic accommodation and magnificent gastronomic options to round off your weekend, including the Parador Hotels of Segovia and La Granja. You can also try typical dishes such as the famous Segovian suckling pig, Judiones de La Granja, Sopa Castellana and Ponche Segoviano, a delicious typical dessert, together with excellent Ribera del Duero, Rueda or Verdejo wines.
  • If you have time, the area around Segovia also offers some great plans such as a hiking route along the banks of the Eresma River, a visit to the Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso and its gardens (a replica of Versailles), fried eggs with chorizo from Cantimpalos in Venta Pinilllos, or a visit to the DYC Distilleries with tasting included (www.dyc.es/reserva-ahora).
  • We collaborate with Turismo de Segovia (www.turismodesegovia.com). If during the 48 hours before or after your balloon flight you show your flight ticket at the Visitor Reception Centre (next to the Aqueduct), you can enjoy a reduced rate on the ‘Conoce Segovia’ Guided Tours and free access to the Didactic Centre of the Jewish Quarter, Puerta de San Andrés (La Muralla), Real Casa de Moneda, Casa-Museo de Antonio Machado and Francisco Peralta's Puppet Collection.
  • We share the excitement of important recent events such as the 550th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Isabella I of Castile in the Alcazar, or Disney's confirmation that Snow White's castle is inspired by the Alcazar of Segovia.

Did you know that...?

The first Spanish balloon was built in Segovia. Joseph Louis Proust directed its construction in a small building on the grounds of the Alcazar of Segovia. The project was based on mathematical calculations, so that it could be raised to a suitable height to discover the enemy camp in comfort. According to the Marquis of Lozoya, the balloon was 45 feet in diameter and 93 feet long and was shaped like a wineskin. After several tests, on 14 November 1792, an exhibition was held at El Escorial in the presence of King Carlos IV, in which Proust himself, three officers and two cadets of the Segovia Artillery ascended.
